My Low Carbon Diet Entry #24

November 12 - November 18,2012
          Another busy week passed. We have so many outputs,projects, assignments and even test to accomplish, yet I still don’t forget my duty as God’s steward to care and protect nature. This help may be little, but at least I did my best to preserve nature.
         This week, as I am making my assignments/ outputs, I manage my waste. I throw my garbage properly in the trash can. I also collect papers to donate or to sell for good use. The computer is always turned on, but I make sure that there is no other gadget/ appliance that are open. And, when I’m with all of these, I spend my time to review, write lectures, sleep / rest instead of playing computer games or watching television.
         Since the weather is something cold, I often use electric fan especially at night. I also don’t waste water by means of brushing my teeth using glass of water. I also make sure to turn off the light when not in use and even appliances. And lastly, I prefer to walk or to ride on a bicycle when going to near places. These are the few things I’ve done this week that you may notice a cyclic, but its part of my life, a duty to save nature.

November 5 - November 11,2012
          A week passed. The weather is something hot in which we do not expect. We’re expecting for cold and windy weather because northeast had just come a week ago. Even tough it’s hot,it does not affect my daily routine of protecting nature as God’s steward.

This week I…

  • Manage my wastes by throwing garbages in the trash can;
  • Segregate wastes into biodegradable and non-biodegradable;
  • Turn off the electricfan when it’s cold especially in the morning;
  • Turn off then unplug any appliances not in use;
  • Prevent the water leaking from the faucet;
  • Seldom use computer or any gadget;
  • Turn off the lights during the day;
  • Collect papers instead of throwing;
  • Clean my room especially the light bulbs for it to give a better light; and lastly,
  • Prefer walking instead of riding vehicle when going to near places.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #22

October 29 - November 4,2012

          This week, we have to go to school for 3 days only. This is due to some special holidays like All Saints Day and All Souls Day. This is the time where we visit cemetery to remember our beloved relatives who passed away. We light candles and put flowers into their grave. As of this, I can still help nature in many little ways.
           This week, I only go to school for 2 days, because we have to clean the grave of our beloved relatives on the 3rd day. We don’t have much assignment / outputs to do and so I spend my time to rest or sleep early. As of this, I seldom use computer. I also seldom use gadgets especially my cellphone and so I seldom charge it. I also turn off the lights or any appliances not in use.
            When the long weekend came, I help my brother in doing his projects in some subjects. As I am helping him, I manage waste. I throw garbage properly in the trash can. I also collect papers wherein I have trash can for papers so that I can sell or donate it to our school. I also segregate wastes and sometimes recycling it if I have time.
             This week, we also experienced a cold weather especially in the morning. As of this, I seldom use electricfan and I seldom use much water to cool my body. Well, these are the only things I do to help nature in a little way. It may be little, atlease I made an effort to help nature and to be God’s steward

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #21

October 22 - October 28,2012
          Supposedly we'll have a Semestral Break, but unfortunately, we didn't. This is due to “Southwest Monsoon" wherein our class was suspended for 4 days. As of this, we should pay for those unexpected “no classes” by means of not having a semestral break. Most of the students are sad, but we should be thankful because we can still get benefit from that, we’re still able to learn.

           This rainy week, first of all, I seldom use electricfan. It’s cold and so I turn off the electricfan when it’s night. Well, this is the one of the signs that Christmas is coming! This week, I also turn off the lights or any appliances not in use. I also seldom watch television or any gadget. And lastly, I dispose my garbage properly.
           When the long weekend came, I first focus doing my assignments, lecture and some projects. I am only using computer if necessary. When I am finish with it, I helped my mother in some household chores like washing dishes. I make sure that there no water leaking from the faucet. And lastly, I clean my room and collect plastic bottles, papers to be recycled for my project.
           This weekend, we also experience a very rainy and cold weather, due to the typhoon “Ofel”. This typhoon left our country a very tremendous flood and landslides. There were more than 20 persons dead because of this. As of this, we should be more responsible of taking care of nature for us not to experience this again.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #20

October 14 - October 20,2012
         A tiring week passed, Even though it’s just the start of Third Grading, we’re already doing some projects and activities. I need to study more yet, I never forget to take  care of nature.
         Third grading had just start. I spend my time more on studying and making assignments. As I am making assignments, I first look for some information in the textbook instead of surfing the internet immediately. For me, it is more reliable in textbooks compare to some sites in the internet. As of that, I helped again the nature to decrease the use of energy and I also help my parents in financial needs especially our electric bills. I also turn off the lights not in use. I often use gadgets and so I often charge it. And lastly, I often watch television. All I have to do is to focus in my studies.
          This week I also manage my waste. I throw my garbage properly in the trash can. I also segregate it. In addition to that, I minimize the use of plastics/ plastic bags. I collect plastic bottles and papers for my project. When I have time, I also recycle.
          When its weekend, all I have to do is to make assignments and go to my classmate’s house to practice our role play. When I’m done doing all of this, I sleep to regain the energy I lost for the past few days. See, it’s a very tiring week yet, it brings a lot of fun because I can still help nature a lot.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #19

October 7 - October 13,2012

         A tiring, yet a happy weekend had just passed. It’s tiring because we have Saturday Classes to take our Second Periodical Test. I’m very busy reviewing and completing my requirements for this 2nd Grading Period. Even though I’m very busy, I’m still happy because, I can still help nature in some little ways.
         This week, I spend my time more on reviewing my lessons and making projects. The computer is always turned on and I use the lights frequently. But, I still don’t forget nature. While I am using computer, I make sure that there is no appliances open especially our television. I am only watching when there’s news. I also often use gadgets like cellphone, PSP of my brother, etc. It’s just a matter of wasting time, money and energy. I also unplug the appliances not in use. And lastly, as I am making projects, I manage my waste. I throw my waste properly in the trash can. I don’t throw papers and plastics bottles. Instead, I am collecting it and sell or donate to our school for them to recycle. And when I have time, I segregate it.
          The day gets colder and colder; the number of days get shorter and the number of nights get longer. As of this I often use electric fan, and I don’t use much water to cool my body.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry#18

September 30 - October 6,2012
        We experieced a cold and rainy weather this week. Even though it’s raining, “Show must go on!”. It did not affect our lesson / schedule of classes because of our industrious teachers who don’t let their time wasted for nothing.
        As God’s steward, I don’t forget my habits to save and protect nature, that maybe little, yet a very big help. This week, I spend my time doing my homeworks, projects, outputs, lectures, etc. The computer is always turned on, yet I don’t watch television or use any gadget when one of them is use. I only turn on the lights during the night, or when it’s dark. I also unplug appliances not in use. It also consumes energy even though we’re not using it. I also manage my waste, I throw my garbage in the trash can properly and segregate it. I also often use electric fan because it’s really getting cold!
        This week, we celebrated the “World Teacher’s Day” to show our thoughtfulness and to thank them for all the good deeds they gave to us. As of this, clubs prepared some activities to celebrate this event. There’s a card making wherein we use recycled materials such as plastics, bottles and papers. We also prepared some intermissions to be performed at the gymnasium last Friday.
        This week may be a tiring week, but full with joy. I helped the nature a lot and expressed to our teachers our thoughtfulness and love to them.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #17

September 23 - September 29,2012

          This week, we experienced unpredictable weather, maybe that’s just because typhoon “Lawin” had just leaved the Philippine area of responsibility. Well I’m very thankful that there’s no bad effects of this compare to the other typhoons we experienced. As of this, I don’t forget my little habits to help environment, yet very helpful for me.
           This week, we’re always having free time due to the preparation of most awaiting event of the players, the “Intramurals”. As of this, I spend my time wisely. I spend my time writing lectures for some subjects. I also minimize the use of paper and plastics. I don’t waste them; instead I donate them for them to be recycled. This week also, as I am watching sports, I throw my garbage properly.
            When weekend comes, I spend most of my time to rest/ sleep to regain energy from the past weekdays wherein I almost lost my energy in the body. As of this, I often use gadgets. When I’m getting bored, I am playing, not computer games but educational games such as chess, dama and snake and ladders with my brother. This will not only help to lessen our energy our energy consumption but teach us how to be sport in every game we play.
             The day gets colder and colder yet Christmas is coming! I’m starting to turn off the electricfan when its dawn or the sun rises. I just letting the cold breeze of air come over by the window or to fan myself.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #16

September 16-September 22, 2012

        This week passed, we experienced a very rainy weather. According to PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration), there’s a typhoon named Lawin that will hit Eastern Visayas and some other places in Luzon. As of this news, we must be aware and ready of this typhoon.
        This week, we don’t have much assignments, outputs, seatworks, etc. because some of our teachers are busy for the contest and for the intramurals next week. As of this, I’m still keeping myself busy to write some lectures so that I will not stress as what happened to me last grading period. I’m still doing my habits to help and preserve nature. This week, I often use computer. I only use them for something we need to search. I also aften watch television or use any other appliances. Instead, I used to play snake and ladders, chess with my brother. I also unplug any gadget/ appliances not in use. Its raing yet it’s cold, I often use electricfans. This habits will not only lessen our electric consumption but helps nature a lot.
        This week, I also throw my garbage properly. I’m also segregating it wherein I have trash can for plastics, for papers and to non-biodegradable. I also don’t waste paper because 1 piece of it causes the trees to be cut in which these trees are very useful that helps in maintaining the balance of nature.
        “Every drop counts”. As of this, I am not also wasting water. When I’m brushing my teeth, I use glass of water. I also prevent the water from leaking. When I’m taking a bath, I use dipper instead of taking a shower.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #15

September 9 - September 15,2012

          A cold and rainy week has just passed. Maybe it’s just normal because it’s already “Ber” Months and Christmas is coming! And so the weather is getting colder and colder due to Northeast Monsoon. This week we have so many assignments, lectures to be accomplished, even though we have many vacant periods, we’re still busy because of some of this requirements.
          I still don’t forget Mother Nature. Even though we’re all busy, I don’t watch television when my computer is turned on. I also manage my waste especially paper. I don’t waste them, because I know, these papers can be used again which is a very big help to nature especially to the trees. I am only using light when it’s night time or dark. I turn off the lights not in use especially when it’s daytime. I also segregate my waste into biodegradable to non- biodegradable and lessen the use of plastics.
          When weekend comes, I lessen the use of my gadgets and so I often charge them. My Groupmates and I decided not to practice this weekend. Instead, we just held practice last Friday because our class is shortened. It’s just a matter of wasting time, money and adds pollution to the environment if we’re going to practice this weekend. Besides, we’re all tired and stress this past few days!
          Because again, it’s cold, I often use electricfan. I used to fan myself and stay outside or on the terrace of our house. This weekend, I also tried to throw recycle some things that cannot be use here in my room. This are the only the few things I do to help Nature this week.

The Philippine Public Storm Warning Signals

Public Storm Signal No.1

Meterological Conditions:

  • A tropical cyclone will affect the locality.
  • Winds of 30-60 kph may be expected in at least 36 hours or intermittent rains may be expected within 36 hours. (When the tropical cyclone develops very close to the locality a shorter lead time of the occurrence of the winds will be specified in the warning bulletin.
Impact of Winds:
  • Twigs and branches of small trees may be broken.
  • Some banana plants may be tilted or downed.
  • Some houses of very light materials (nipa and cogon) may be partially unroofed.
  • Unless this warning signal is upgraded during the entire existence of the tropical cyclone, only very light or no damage at all may be sustained by the exposed communities.
  • Rice crop, however, may suffer significant damage when it is in its flowering stage.
Precautionary Measures:
  • When the tropical cyclone is strong or is intensifying and is moving closer, this signal may be upgraded to the next higher level.
  • The waves on coastal waters may gradually develop and become bigger and higher.
  • The people are advised to listen to the latest severe weather bulletin issued by PAGASA every six hours. In the meantime, business may be carried out as usual except when flood occur.
  • Disaster preparedness is activated to alert status.
Public Storm Signal No.2

Meterological Conditions:
  • A tropical cyclone will affect the the locality.
  • Winds of greater than 60 kph and up to 100 kph may be expected in at least 24 hours.
Impact of Winds:
  • Some coconut trees may be tilted with few others broken.
  • Few big trees may be uprooted.
  • Many banana plants may be downed.
  • Rice and corn may be adversely affected.
  • Large number of nipa and cogon houses may be partially or totally unroofed.
  • Some old galvanized iron roofings may be peeled off.
  • In general, the winds may bring light to moderate damage to the exposed communities.
Precautionary Measures:
  • The sea and coastal waters are dangerous to small seacrafts
  • Special attention should be given to the latest position, the direction and speed of movement and the intensity of the storm as it may intensify and move towards the locality.
  • The general public especially people travelling by sea and air are cautioned to avoid unnecessary risks.
  • Outdoor activities of children should be postponed.
  • Secure properties before the signal is upgraded.
  • Disaster preparedness agencies / organizations are in action to alert their communities.
Public Storm Signal No.3

Meterological Conditions:

  • A tropical cyclone will affect the locality.
  • Winds of greater than 100 kph up to 185 kph may be expected in at least 18 hours.
Impact of Winds:
  • Many coconut trees may be broken or destroyed.
  • Almost all banana plants may be downed and a large number of trees may be uprooted.
  • Rice and corn crops may suffer heavy losses.
  • Majority of all nipa and cogon houses may be unroofed or destroyed and there may be considerable damage to structures of light to medium construction.
  • There may be widespread disruption of electrical power and communication services.
  • In general, moderate to heavy damage may be experienced, particularly in the agricultural and industrial sectors.
Precautionary Measures:
  • The disturbance is dangerous to the communities threatened/affected.
  • The sea and coastal waters will be very dangerous to all seacrafts.
  • Travel is very risky especially by sea and air.
  • People are advised to seek shelter in strong buildings, evacuate low-lying areas and to stay away from the coasts and river banks.
  • Watch out for the passage of the "eye" of the typhoon indicated by a sudden occurrence of fair weather immediately after very bad weather with very strong winds coming gnerally from the north.
  • When the "eye" of the typhoon hit the community do not venture away from the safe shelter because after one to two hours the worst weather will resume with the very strong winds coming from the south.
  • Classes in all levels should be suspended and children should stay in the safety of strong buildings. Disaster preparedness and response agencies/organizations are in action with appropriate response to actual emergency.
Public Storm Signal No.4

Meterological Conditions:
  • A very intense typhoon will affect the locality.
  • Very strong winds of more than 185 kph may be expected in at least 12 hours.
Impact of Winds:
  • Coconut plantation may suffer extensive damage.
  • Many large trees may be uprooted.
  • Rice and corn plantation may suffer severe losses.
  • Most residential and institutional buildings of mixed construction may be severely damaged.
  • Electrical power distribution and communication services may be severely disrupted.
  • In the overall, damage to affected communities can be very heavy.
Precautionary Measures:
  • The situation is potentially very destructive to the community.
  • All travels and outdoor activities should be cancelled.
  • Evacuation to safer shelters should have been completed since it may be too late under this situation.
  • With PSWS #4, the locality is very likely to be hit directly by the eye of the typhoon. As the eye of the typhoon approaches, the weather will continuously worsen with the winds increasing to its strongest coming generally from the north. Then a sudden improvement of the weather with light winds (a lull) will be experienced. This means that the eye of the typhoon is over the locality. This improved weather may last for one to two hours depending on the diameter of the eye and the speed of movement. As the eye moves out of the locality, the worst weather experienced before the lull will suddenly commence. This time the very strong winds will come generally from the south.
  • The disaster coordinating councils concerned and other disaster response organizations are now fully responding to emergencies and in full readiness to immediately respond to possible calamity.

My Insights & Reflections:
  • Today, I learned that Storm Warning Signals are the storm signals that are usually raised when an area is about to be hit by a tropical cyclone. As a tropical cyclone gains strength and/or gets nearer to an area having a storm signal, the warning may be upgraded to a higher one in that particular area. Conversely, as a tropical cyclone weakens and/or gets farther to an area, it may be downgraded to a lower signal or may be lifted (that is, an area will have no storm signal). Classes for preschool are canceled when Signal #1 is in effect. High school classes and below are canceled under Signal #2 and classes for colleges and universities and below are canceled under Signal #3.
  • I will apply my learning about this in my daily life for the possibility to raise this storm signal into our area.
  • Learning about this phenomenon is important because this lesson can help us to be ready and responsible for any effect of this storm signals.
  • On larger scale, I will share my learnings about this phenomenon to my family, my classmates and to any other people for to them to be also ready and knowledgeable of the affect of this phenomenon.
  • I need to know more about this because this information is not enough for me to be ready in this phenomenon.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #14

September 2- September 8, 2012

          A week of again, a very unpredictable weather has just passed. In morning, it seems that its very cold yet, in the afternoon, it’s very hot! But this do not affect me to do my habits to save nature.
          Most of our teachers are busy due to some contest to be held this week. We’re almost having free time, but we’re not wasting it, we’re reviewing/ studying. As a steward, I am not wasting my paper. I am just using it just to draw or write something not so important. Unlike my other classmates, they’re using it to make doodle arts, draw something that even though it’s so cute, I am not spending/ wasting my time for that. When I’m also eating snacks, I throw it properly on trash can. I also often use plastics or plastic bottles. Maybe, this is the happiest weekend for us, students because we don’t have much to do.
          When it’s weekend, I prefer to stay in our house instead of going into my classmate’s house, just wasting our time to play. Because for me, it’s just wasting of time, money and sometimes it adds pollution!
          I also minimize the use gadgets especially my cellphone and our computer. I also often use electricfans and lastly, I unplug the appliances not in use. This are only the few things that I can do to help nature and also to help to minimize energy/ electric consumption. :)
