My Low Carbon Diet Entry #17

September 23 - September 29,2012

This week, we experienced unpredictable weather, maybe that’s just because typhoon “Lawin” had just leaved the Philippine area of responsibility. Well I’m very thankful that there’s no bad effects of this compare to the other typhoons we experienced. As of this, I don’t forget my little habits to help environment, yet very helpful for me.
This week, we’re always having free time due to the preparation of most awaiting event of the players, the “Intramurals”. As of this, I spend my time wisely. I spend my time writing lectures for some subjects. I also minimize the use of paper and plastics. I don’t waste them; instead I donate them for them to be recycled. This week also, as I am watching sports, I throw my garbage properly.
When weekend comes, I spend most of my time to rest/ sleep to regain energy from the past weekdays wherein I almost lost my energy in the body. As of this, I often use gadgets. When I’m getting bored, I am playing, not computer games but educational games such as chess, dama and snake and ladders with my brother. This will not only help to lessen our energy our energy consumption but teach us how to be sport in every game we play.
The day gets colder and colder yet Christmas is coming! I’m starting to turn off the electricfan when its dawn or the sun rises. I just letting the cold breeze of air come over by the window or to fan myself.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #16

September 16-September 22, 2012

This week passed, we experienced a very rainy weather. According to PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration), there’s a typhoon named Lawin that will hit Eastern Visayas and some other places in Luzon. As of this news, we must be aware and ready of this typhoon.
This week, we don’t have much assignments, outputs, seatworks, etc. because some of our teachers are busy for the contest and for the intramurals next week. As of this, I’m still keeping myself busy to write some lectures so that I will not stress as what happened to me last grading period. I’m still doing my habits to help and preserve nature. This week, I often use computer. I only use them for something we need to search. I also aften watch television or use any other appliances. Instead, I used to play snake and ladders, chess with my brother. I also unplug any gadget/ appliances not in use. Its raing yet it’s cold, I often use electricfans. This habits will not only lessen our electric consumption but helps nature a lot.
This week, I also throw my garbage properly. I’m also segregating it wherein I have trash can for plastics, for papers and to non-biodegradable. I also don’t waste paper because 1 piece of it causes the trees to be cut in which these trees are very useful that helps in maintaining the balance of nature.
“Every drop counts”. As of this, I am not also wasting water. When I’m brushing my teeth, I use glass of water. I also prevent the water from leaking. When I’m taking a bath, I use dipper instead of taking a shower.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #15

September 9 - September 15,2012

A cold and rainy week has just passed. Maybe it’s just normal because it’s already “Ber” Months and Christmas is coming! And so the weather is getting colder and colder due to Northeast Monsoon. This week we have so many assignments, lectures to be accomplished, even though we have many vacant periods, we’re still busy because of some of this requirements.
I still don’t forget Mother Nature. Even though we’re all busy, I don’t watch television when my computer is turned on. I also manage my waste especially paper. I don’t waste them, because I know, these papers can be used again which is a very big help to nature especially to the trees. I am only using light when it’s night time or dark. I turn off the lights not in use especially when it’s daytime. I also segregate my waste into biodegradable to non- biodegradable and lessen the use of plastics.
When weekend comes, I lessen the use of my gadgets and so I often charge them. My Groupmates and I decided not to practice this weekend. Instead, we just held practice last Friday because our class is shortened. It’s just a matter of wasting time, money and adds pollution to the environment if we’re going to practice this weekend. Besides, we’re all tired and stress this past few days!
Because again, it’s cold, I often use electricfan. I used to fan myself and stay outside or on the terrace of our house. This weekend, I also tried to throw recycle some things that cannot be use here in my room. This are the only the few things I do to help Nature this week.

The Philippine Public Storm Warning Signals

Public Storm Signal No.1

Meterological Conditions:

  • A tropical cyclone will affect the locality.
  • Winds of 30-60 kph may be expected in at least 36 hours or intermittent rains may be expected within 36 hours. (When the tropical cyclone develops very close to the locality a shorter lead time of the occurrence of the winds will be specified in the warning bulletin.
Impact of Winds:
  • Twigs and branches of small trees may be broken.
  • Some banana plants may be tilted or downed.
  • Some houses of very light materials (nipa and cogon) may be partially unroofed.
  • Unless this warning signal is upgraded during the entire existence of the tropical cyclone, only very light or no damage at all may be sustained by the exposed communities.
  • Rice crop, however, may suffer significant damage when it is in its flowering stage.
Precautionary Measures:
  • When the tropical cyclone is strong or is intensifying and is moving closer, this signal may be upgraded to the next higher level.
  • The waves on coastal waters may gradually develop and become bigger and higher.
  • The people are advised to listen to the latest severe weather bulletin issued by PAGASA every six hours. In the meantime, business may be carried out as usual except when flood occur.
  • Disaster preparedness is activated to alert status.
Public Storm Signal No.2

Meterological Conditions:
  • A tropical cyclone will affect the the locality.
  • Winds of greater than 60 kph and up to 100 kph may be expected in at least 24 hours.
Impact of Winds:
  • Some coconut trees may be tilted with few others broken.
  • Few big trees may be uprooted.
  • Many banana plants may be downed.
  • Rice and corn may be adversely affected.
  • Large number of nipa and cogon houses may be partially or totally unroofed.
  • Some old galvanized iron roofings may be peeled off.
  • In general, the winds may bring light to moderate damage to the exposed communities.
Precautionary Measures:
  • The sea and coastal waters are dangerous to small seacrafts
  • Special attention should be given to the latest position, the direction and speed of movement and the intensity of the storm as it may intensify and move towards the locality.
  • The general public especially people travelling by sea and air are cautioned to avoid unnecessary risks.
  • Outdoor activities of children should be postponed.
  • Secure properties before the signal is upgraded.
  • Disaster preparedness agencies / organizations are in action to alert their communities.
Public Storm Signal No.3

Meterological Conditions:

  • A tropical cyclone will affect the locality.
  • Winds of greater than 100 kph up to 185 kph may be expected in at least 18 hours.
Impact of Winds:
  • Many coconut trees may be broken or destroyed.
  • Almost all banana plants may be downed and a large number of trees may be uprooted.
  • Rice and corn crops may suffer heavy losses.
  • Majority of all nipa and cogon houses may be unroofed or destroyed and there may be considerable damage to structures of light to medium construction.
  • There may be widespread disruption of electrical power and communication services.
  • In general, moderate to heavy damage may be experienced, particularly in the agricultural and industrial sectors.
Precautionary Measures:
  • The disturbance is dangerous to the communities threatened/affected.
  • The sea and coastal waters will be very dangerous to all seacrafts.
  • Travel is very risky especially by sea and air.
  • People are advised to seek shelter in strong buildings, evacuate low-lying areas and to stay away from the coasts and river banks.
  • Watch out for the passage of the "eye" of the typhoon indicated by a sudden occurrence of fair weather immediately after very bad weather with very strong winds coming gnerally from the north.
  • When the "eye" of the typhoon hit the community do not venture away from the safe shelter because after one to two hours the worst weather will resume with the very strong winds coming from the south.
  • Classes in all levels should be suspended and children should stay in the safety of strong buildings. Disaster preparedness and response agencies/organizations are in action with appropriate response to actual emergency.
Public Storm Signal No.4

Meterological Conditions:
  • A very intense typhoon will affect the locality.
  • Very strong winds of more than 185 kph may be expected in at least 12 hours.
Impact of Winds:
  • Coconut plantation may suffer extensive damage.
  • Many large trees may be uprooted.
  • Rice and corn plantation may suffer severe losses.
  • Most residential and institutional buildings of mixed construction may be severely damaged.
  • Electrical power distribution and communication services may be severely disrupted.
  • In the overall, damage to affected communities can be very heavy.
Precautionary Measures:
  • The situation is potentially very destructive to the community.
  • All travels and outdoor activities should be cancelled.
  • Evacuation to safer shelters should have been completed since it may be too late under this situation.
  • With PSWS #4, the locality is very likely to be hit directly by the eye of the typhoon. As the eye of the typhoon approaches, the weather will continuously worsen with the winds increasing to its strongest coming generally from the north. Then a sudden improvement of the weather with light winds (a lull) will be experienced. This means that the eye of the typhoon is over the locality. This improved weather may last for one to two hours depending on the diameter of the eye and the speed of movement. As the eye moves out of the locality, the worst weather experienced before the lull will suddenly commence. This time the very strong winds will come generally from the south.
  • The disaster coordinating councils concerned and other disaster response organizations are now fully responding to emergencies and in full readiness to immediately respond to possible calamity.

My Insights & Reflections:
  • Today, I learned that Storm Warning Signals are the storm signals that are usually raised when an area is about to be hit by a tropical cyclone. As a tropical cyclone gains strength and/or gets nearer to an area having a storm signal, the warning may be upgraded to a higher one in that particular area. Conversely, as a tropical cyclone weakens and/or gets farther to an area, it may be downgraded to a lower signal or may be lifted (that is, an area will have no storm signal). Classes for preschool are canceled when Signal #1 is in effect. High school classes and below are canceled under Signal #2 and classes for colleges and universities and below are canceled under Signal #3.
  • I will apply my learning about this in my daily life for the possibility to raise this storm signal into our area.
  • Learning about this phenomenon is important because this lesson can help us to be ready and responsible for any effect of this storm signals.
  • On larger scale, I will share my learnings about this phenomenon to my family, my classmates and to any other people for to them to be also ready and knowledgeable of the affect of this phenomenon.
  • I need to know more about this because this information is not enough for me to be ready in this phenomenon.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #14

September 2- September 8, 2012

A week of again, a very unpredictable weather has just passed. In morning, it seems that its very cold yet, in the afternoon, it’s very hot! But this do not affect me to do my habits to save nature.
Most of our teachers are busy due to some contest to be held this week. We’re almost having free time, but we’re not wasting it, we’re reviewing/ studying. As a steward, I am not wasting my paper. I am just using it just to draw or write something not so important. Unlike my other classmates, they’re using it to make doodle arts, draw something that even though it’s so cute, I am not spending/ wasting my time for that. When I’m also eating snacks, I throw it properly on trash can. I also often use plastics or plastic bottles. Maybe, this is the happiest weekend for us, students because we don’t have much to do.
When it’s weekend, I prefer to stay in our house instead of going into my classmate’s house, just wasting our time to play. Because for me, it’s just wasting of time, money and sometimes it adds pollution!
I also minimize the use gadgets especially my cellphone and our computer. I also often use electricfans and lastly, I unplug the appliances not in use. This are only the few things that I can do to help nature and also to help to minimize energy/ electric consumption. :)

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #13

August 26- September 1, 2012
Rainy Months are over, “BER” Months here it comes! I’m starting to put my room some Christmas Decorations. This event is the the event that I'm always waiting for because I see my cousins and other relatives when Christmas is coming. Still the weather is something unpredictable. Sometimes it rains very hard, and sometimes the sun shines very bright and it is hot.
This week, we only have 3 days to go to school due to the celebration of National Heroes Day & 126th Day of Marcelo H. Del Pilar, a hero in times of Spaniards from Bulacan, and so I help again the nature a lot. We don’t have to do much assignment and so I often use computer. I am just using it when is I have to do something very important. I also often use gadget especially my cellphone. I’m just using it when I need to text my mother or other relatives.
I often watch television. Instead, I continue to do my lecture and review for test to be taken next week. To help lessen our energy consumption, I also unplug the appliance not in use. I also decided to clean my room and segregate it biodegradable to non-biodegradable.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #12

August 19- August 25, 2012

A week has just then passed. Most of the days in class were suspended due to some special holidays. The weather is something very unpredictable, so I am always bringing umbrella in case the rain will fall. As of these happenings, I helped again to save the nature, that may be too small but, for me it’s a very big help for nature.
Every morning, I wake up with a smile. I thank God for all the good things that he gave to me and my family. I ate my breakfast and brush my teeth using a glass of water. After that, I start doing my assignments and some lectures to be accomplished this week at our terrace so that I will not be using light during daytime.
When I’m going to near places, I prefer to walk instead of riding vehicle. This week also, I often use gadgets especially my cellphone. These are all the little things I do to help Mother Nature this week

Tropical Cyclone

Formation of Tropical Cyclone
  • Today, I learned that a Tropical Cyclone, also called typhoon or hurricane, is intense circular storm that originates over warm tropical oceans and is characterized by low atmospheric pressure, high winds, and heavy rain. It strengthens when water evaporated from the ocean is released as the saturated air rises, resulting in condensation of water vapor contained in the moist air. It generates winds that exceed 119 km (74 miles) per hour.
  • I will apply my learnings about this phenomenon in my daily life in order for me to be alert and aware of the possibilities that this may happen in our country.
  • Learning about this phenomenon is important because we can be ready of the effects of this phenomenon.
  • On larger scale, I share my learnings to my friends, family and to other people for them to be also aware and ready if this will occur in our country.
  • I need to know more about the factors and effect of this phenomenon so that I can be responsible and alert of this phenomenon.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #11

August 12 - August 18,2012

A week has just passed. The weather is something unpredictable. Sometimes, it rains very hard and sometimes the sun appears just like it’s very hot! But still, I don’t forget my little ways in helping nature.

This week, I…
  • Often use electric fans, instead I let the cool wind come over by our window;
  • 2. Unplug the appliances not in use;
  • 3. I turn off the lights during the day;
  • 4. Minimize the usage of gadgets; and lastly,
  • 5. Throw my garbage in proper place.
This week also, Second Grading has just started. It seems that the first Grading has just started last week! New lessons, new projects and etc. and so, I spend my time wisely by means of I study my lessons instead of playing some gadgets.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #10

August 5 - August 11,2012

A very rainy week has just passed. It’s very cold yet, the rain does not stop pouring. I am always wearing sweater even though I am only here at our house. I did not use electric fan, instead I let the cool air come over the window and feel it. And because it is cold, I often use water to make my body cool or fresh.

Classes were suspended for 4 days. We’re not as busy as last week, and so I spend my time wisely to help the environment. I decided to clean my room again and design it. I clean the light for it to give a better light. I also separate my garbage to biodegradable to non-biodegradable. I decided to put some environmental posters so that I will get inspire to help and save nature. After I clean my room, I continue to make my assignments and lectures and review some of the lessons that has been discussed this Second Grading Period. I also often use gadgets like cellphone and so, I often charge it. That help may be a little help, but for me, I know it help a lot the nature.
There’s no typhoon but, why does the rain pouring very hard? Class in some school and other government offices were suspended. According to PAGASA, it’s only because of the southwest monsoon. But this monsoon brings a very serious problem. Some of the places in region 3 and other regions in Luzon suffered a very tremendous flood. Many lives gone and many properties destroyed. Its only monsoon yet, bring a worse flood! How about if a very strong typhoon come? Oh, I wish that we should really be concern more on this tremendous problem.

LPA (Low Pressure Area)

Air rises near low-pressure areas. As air rises, it cools and often condenses into clouds and precipitation
  • Today, I learned that Low Pressure Area is a region where the atmospheric pressure at sea level is lower than that of surrounding locations. It is form under areas of wind divergence which occurs in upper levels of the troposphere. It is usually associated with high winds, warm air, and atmospheric lifting. Because of this, Low Pressure Area normally produces clouds, precipitation, and other bad weather such as tropical storms and cyclones.
  • I will apply my learnings about this phenomenon in other lessons related to this phenomenon and in my daily activities.
  • Learning about this phenomenon is important because this can help me understand the different weather circumstances that really affect our lives.
  • On larger scale, I share my learnings to my friends, family or any other people for them to be aware and ready also if this will ever happen to them.
  • I need to know more about this phenomenon so that I can be more responsible and aware of its effects if this phenomenon will happen in our place.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #9

July 29 - August 4,2012
A very tiring week has just passed. This week, I spent more time on reviewing my lessons because we’re going to have to take Periodical Test for the First Grading Period. Still, I don’t forget my habits to help nature.
This week is a very cold week! I often use electricfan and I used to fan myself or let the cool air come in to our window. I often use computer and I also often watch television or any gadget because I used to spend my time on reviewing my lessons or making some projects. We don’t have much to do and so I help my mother in some household chore like washing dishes. I prevent water from leaking and I use basin of water when washing the dishes. And lastly as I am brushing my teeth, I use glass of water instead of letting it from flowing.
Our country experienced today a very strong typhoon named “Gener”. This typhoon gave a very tragedy event. Many properties destroyed and lives are gone. I know that this is due the striking back of nature because of man’s greediness. If we did not cut trees, or do anything that harms the nature, we won’t suffer this very tragedy event. For now, I only wish that we should be aware and know amore on how to protect nature.

My Low Carbon Diet Entry #8

July 15- July 28, 2012
First Grading is about to end, and so a very busy week has passed. I used to sleep before or at 12 midnight! We need to finish outputs and projects because we’re going to take the periodical test next week. But I still don’t forget my ways to conserve energy to help Mother Earth.
Even though the computer is always turn on, I only often watch television and use my cellphone, because I am really busy. I also used to unplug the appliances not in use. When we’re having or practice or going to some near places, I prefer walking instead of riding a vehicle.
And lastly, because again, its raining very hard, I often use electricfan. That help maybe simple, but for me I know, that I help a lot to save the environment.

La Niña Phenomenon

  • Today, I learned that La Niña Phenomenon is the trade wind that is unusually strong due to an enhanced pressure gradient between the eastern and western Pacific. During a period of La Niña, the sea surface temperature across the equatorial Eastern Central Pacific Ocean will be lower than normal by 3–5 °C.
  • I will apply this learning about this phenomenon in my daily activities so that I can be ready and aware regarding with this phenomenon.
  • Learning about this phenomenon is important because this can help in reserving nature and become ready if this will ever occur.
  • On larger scale, I will share my learnings to other people, for hem to know that this phenomenon is not normal, that we should stop bad doings regarding to Mother Nature.
  • I need to know more about this phenomenon so that I can be ready and aware of this phenomenon

El Niño Phenomenon

  • Today, I learned that El Niño Phenomenon is the abnormal warming of surface ocean waters in the eastern tropical Pacific, is one part of what's called the Southern Oscillation (the see-saw pattern of reversing surface air pressure between the eastern and western tropical Pacific). The accepted definition is a warming or cooling of at least 0.5 °C (0.9 °F) averaged over the east-central tropical Pacific Ocean. When El Niño conditions last for many months, extensive ocean warming and the reduction in Easterly Trade winds limits upwelling of cold nutrient-rich deep water and its economic impact to local fishing for an international market can be serious.
  • I will apply my learning about this phenomenon in my daily activities/ habits so that I can be aware of this very serious phenomenon.
  • Learning about this phenomenon is important because I will be aware, knowledgeable and ready this phenomenon will happen.
  • On larger scale, I will share my learnings to other people, for them to be also aware, ready if this phenomenon will happen and lastly for them to know that if we, people will continue doing activities that can destruct the beauty of nature; we will suffer this very serious phenomenon.
  • I need to know more about this phenomenon so that I can be more responsible and aware in all of my actions that I do. I know that this can affect me if this phenomenon occurs.
