ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone)

Global belts on high and low pressure, and the major prevailing winds

  • Today, I learned that Intertropical Convergence Zone is the area encircling the equator where winds originating in the northern and southern hemisphere that comes together. It appears as a band of clouds, usually thunderstorms that circle the globe near the equator. It is also known by sailor "doldrums" where it was originally identified as "Intertropical front" in 1920's to the 1940's. ITCZ fills the role as it is a zone of wind change and speed, otherwise known as horizontal wind shear. It drastically affects rainfall in many equatorial nations, resulting in the wet and dry seasons of the tropics rather than the cold and warm seasons of higher latitudes. Longer term changes in the Intertropical convergence zone can result in severe droughts or flooding in nearby areas.
  • I will apply this learning about ITCZ into my daily life that it is normal that Philippines experiences wet and dry season because of these phenomenon.
  • Learning about this phenomenon is important because it helps us to understand the things happening to our weather, like how do affect the weather?
  • On larger scale, i will share my learning about this phenomenon to others for them to become aware and understand the meaning of this phenomenon.
  • I need to know more on about the occurrence of this phenomenon and how to be aware of that phenomenon.
